MICHAEL A. KIRTLAND is of counsel with the Gasper Law Firm. He is a former Administrative Law Judge for the State of Colorado. Prior to his time on the bench, he was the managing member of Kirtland & Seal L.L.C., in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he limited his practice to the areas of estate planning, wills and trusts, probate, elder law and mediation for both probate and estate planning. He is a member of the American Bar Association’s Real Property, Trusts and Estates Section, where he is the past-Chair of the Elder Law Group. He served as a member of the Executive Council for ABA’s Senior Lawyers Division. Judge Kirtland is a past - vice president of the National Elder Law Foundation, as well as being a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. He is a member of the Colorado Bar Association’s Ethics Committee, and a member of the Trust and Estate, Elder Law, and Alternate Dispute Resolution Sections. He served as chair of the Judicial Performance Commission for Colorado’s Fourth Judicial District. He is co-author of Getting Started with Advance Directives, published by the American Bar Association. In addition to his law degree he holds a Masters degree in Public Administration and a Master of Laws degree in taxation. Judge Kirtland is licensed to practice law in both Alabama and Colorado. He is admitted to the United States Supreme Court, the United States Tax Court, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Tenth and Eleventh Circuits, as well as the Federal District Courts for the Middle District of Alabama and for the District of Colorado. He is designated a Certified Elder Law Attorney Emeritus by the National Elder Law Foundation. He is a retired U.S. Air Force officer, having served in numerous assignments as a missile operations officer, as a political-military affairs officer and as an instructor at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
